Washington: The Bureau [producer and distributor], 1990. Type of File: Summary statistics. Universe Description: The universe is all retail trade establishments with payroll. Subject-Matter Description: This series of four files provides 1987 data by SIC category for number of establishments, sales, payroll entire year, payroll first quarter, number of paid employees for pay period including March 12, 1987, number of sole proprietorships, number of unincorporated businesses, sales per establishment, sales per employee, annual payroll per employee and employees per establishment. Data are also available on volume of sales ranking within state, and percent of state total sales. 1982 figures and percent change 1987-82 data are provided for number of establishments, sales, payroll entire year, and number of paid employees for pay period including March 12, 1982. These data are exactly the same as shown in the printed report series of the same name, RC87-A-1 to 52. Each record layout indicates which printed tables correspond to that file. Geographic Coverage: Data are provided for the U.S., States, Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSA), Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSA), non-MSA, counties with 350 or more establishments with payroll, and places with 350 or more establishments with payroll. Selected data are also provided for all counties and for all places with populations of 2500 or more. Technical Description: File Structure: dBASE III+ Most files have also have dBASE ".NDX" index files and one or more label files that can be linked to them. Data for each state and the U.S. summary are structured as separate files within each of the groups listed below. Each file name consists of the group name (e.g. RC87A1) plus the two-character postal abbreviation (e.g. AL), with the extension .DBF. For other State abbreviations, see Table 2 of the CD-ROM File Information. File Size: Approximate size in kilobytes is shown on page vii. Record size is shown in the File Layout and Database Structure sections of this chapter. Exact record counts and file size can be retrieved by way of the dBASE "DIR" command or various external utilities. File sequence, available indexes, and linkable label files: RC87A11: 1. File Sequence: State records, followed by records for Places 2500+, counties, Note: For CD-ROM 1D, files for several States were revised to reflect the Correction Notes that were published for the corresponding printed reports. Each revised sales, employment or payroll figure is assigned a flag of "9." Corrections were published for only those areas and kinds of business where the adjustments amounted to 5-percent or ore of sales. The user should be aware that this process introduced certain mathematical inconsistencies into the data. For example, the sales of grocery stores in an area may have increased by more than 5 percent, but that dollar increase may have amounted to less than 5 percent of total retail sales. Thus, the fact that grocery store sales for that area were revised while the overall total was not may result in kind-of-business figures that no longer add to the retail trade total. MSA/CMSA/PMSAs, then non-MSA records 2. Available indexes: a. RC87K1: By kind of business, record type and geography b. RC87C1: First record for each county c. RC87M1: First record for each MSA or CMSA d. RC87N1: First record for each PMSA e. RC87P1: First record for each Place 3. Linkable label files: a. RTL87KB (kind of business code) b. RECTYPE (record type labels) c. STCODE (state names) d. STCOUNTY (county names) e. STPLACE (place names) f. MSA (MSA, CMSA, and PMSA titles) RC87A2: 1. File Sequence: All record type 10 records followed by all record type 11 records followed by all record type 12 records 2. Available indexes: a. RC87R2: First record for each record type 3. Linkable label files: a. RTL87KB (kind of business code) b. RECTYPE (record type labels) c. STCODE (state names) RC87A31: 1. File Sequence: State record, followed by county record, followed by records for places within the county 2. Available indexes: a. RC87C3: By record type, county and place b. RC87M3: By MSA 3. Linkable label files: a. MSA (MSA, CMSA, and PMSA titles) RC87A4: 1. File Sequence: All Places 2500+ records, followed by all Counties 2500+ records 2. Available indexes: a. RC87R4: First record for each record type Abbreviated state, county and place data from the 1982 and 1977 censuses of retail trade, wholesale trade and service industries support the study of change in economic characteristics over time. The data in these files are as originally published, without adjustment for comparability with statistics from the 1987 Economic Censuses. (Changes in the Standard Industrial Classification system, the definition of establishment counts, and boundaries of some geographic areas are discussed in Chapter 7 of the Guide to the 1987 Economic Censuses and Related Statistics.) Reference Materials: 1987 Economic Census: Geographic Area Series on CD-ROM Technical Documentation. This documentation has general information, a glossary, record layouts for all files, a questionnaire facsimile and other reference material. One copy accompanies each CD-ROM order. Additional copies are available for $5 from Customer Services, Bureau of the Census, Washington, DC 20233. Guide to the 1987 Economic Censuses and Related Statistics. Describes the scope, coverage, classification systems, data items, and data products for each of the economic censuses and related surveys. Data comparability and uses are also discussed. Related Machine-Readable Data Files: Census of Retail Trade, 1987: Geographic Area Series [machine-readable data file]. Provides above described information on machine-readable data tape instead of CD-ROM. A portion of the information is also available online through CENDATA.(TM) Census of Retail Trade, 1987, Nonemployer Statistics. Provides number of establishments and sales for retail trade establishments with no paid employees, for example, "mom and pop" stores. Nonemployers are not included in the statistics in the Geographic Area Series. Data are shown for states, MSAs, counties and places. (Available early 1990.) Census of Retail Trade, 1987, Merchandise Line Sales. Presents data on major categories of merchandise sold by retail kinds of business for the U.S., each State, and each MSA. (Available mid 1990.) Census of Retail Trade, 1987, ZIP Code Statistics. Shows the number of establishments with payroll by kind of business by employment-size class and by sales-size class for each ZIP Code area. Also shown are employment, payroll and sales for ZIP Code area totals, not by kind of business. (Available mid 1990.) Availability: The full data set for all states is available on one CD-ROM for microcomputers. The subscription price of $475 includes up to 7 successive editions of discs as reissued every 3 to 4 months. Individual discs are $150. -------------------- Note: For CD-ROM 1D, files for several States were revised to reflect the Correction Notes that were published for the corresponding printed reports. CENSUS OF RETAIL TRADE--GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES File Specifications CONTENTS General Data Specifications III-7 File Layout III-7 General Data Specifications Data Fields. All files are recorded in dBase III+ format. Numeric data fields contain no alphabetic information. A few fields (those in percentage form) have explicit decimals, unlike corresponding data on tape, which carry only implied decimals. On the other hand, many data items are scaled in thousands or millions, and this is noted only in the file layouts. Any data field which is subject to any special conditions (e.g., suppression to avoid disclosure, not applicable) is preceded by an information flag field which contains explanatory codes. Record Sequence and Geographic Coding. Records are arranged with like records together (e.g., State records, followed by all county records, if any; followed by place records; MSA records, if any; and non-MSA records). The presentation of each type of geography is exhaustive in scope--county records include single-county MSA records and the MSA record contains a duplicate record for that single-county MSA. City records include records for independent cities and cities coextensive with counties. Records also contain all applicable geocodes nty records for MSA counties carry both an MSA code and a county code. Place records contain a county code; the county code `000' and the MSA and PMSA codes of `0000' are used if the place crosses county boundaries. Place records contain both the census place code and the FIPS state code. See the Geographic Code Structure section of this chapter on page 57. Names for geographic variables are carried in files separate from the data files. Each is indexed, so that geographic names can be accessed in conjunction with the corresponding data values. See the Introduction to this CD-ROM for more information on geographic variables. Kind-of-Business Labels. Records in the RC87A1 and RC87A2 files are specific to a particular kind of business, as identified by the RTL87KB code. The term "kind of business" is used instead of "standard industrial classification" (SIC) because some kind-of-business categories represent either combinations or subdivisions of SIC categories. Titles for each kind of business are available in Appendix A, and also in the file RTL87KB.dbf on the CD-ROM. Kind-of-business titles can be linked to data files using the dBase SET RELATION command. Index Files. Each data file has one or more index files which can be used quickly jump to desired records (e.g., using the dBase FIND command) or to change the sequence of access. Available index files are listed in the abstract. Where noted in the abstract that an index is to the "first record for" a particular type of area, the index can be used during dBase FINDs, but the index must be shut off with SET INDEX TO in order to get access to records other than the first for each area. File Layout Most data items have an associated "flag" to describe any special conditions applicable. All flags other than `0' or `9' indicate that the data are not shown and the corresponding data fields contain zeroes. Flags of `9' indicate revisions included for the first time in CD-ROM 1D. The codes are the same for all flags, but are listed in the record layout only for the first flag. In the geographic identification field in each file, NA fields contain either all zeroes or all 9's. See Geographic Code Structure. For those data fields in files RC87A2 that are always NA for certain types of records (as shown in the record layout), both the data field and the corresponding information flag contain zeroes.
