CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES ESTABLISHMENT AND FIRM SIZE Introduction CONTENTS Size of Establishment X-5 Size of Firm X-5 Legal Form of Organization X-6 Geographic Area Covered X-6 This report represents a recompilation of data collected in the 1987 Census of Service Industries and is divided into three categories: size of establishment, size of firm, and legal form of organization. Size of establishment Only establishments which operated the entire year have been classified into the various size groups used in the establishment size tables. An establishment is classified as "operated entire year" if it operated 10 months or more during the year. Data for establishments which reported that they were in operation fewer than 10 months are separately summarized as "not operated entire year." Receipts/revenue size Data are classified into 12 receipts/revenue size groups depending on the value of receipts/revenue reported for the year 1987. Employment size Data are classified into 11 employment size groups depending on the number of employees on the payroll during the pay period including March 12. Proprietors, partners, and unpaid family workers were not regarded as employees in determining the employment size of an establishment. Size of firm A firm may be either a single establishment (single unit) firm or a multiestablishment (multiunit) firm. Firm size groups are based on aggregate data for all establishments operated by the same firm in the kind-of-business classification, group, or total for which data are presented. For example, a firm operates three service establishments: a testing laboratory (SIC 8734), a surveying service (SIC 8713), and a map drafting service (SIC 7389). At each of the three most detailed levels of classification, each of the establishments is a single unit operated by a multi-establishment firm. At the engineering, accounting, research, management, and related services major group level (SIC 87), it is a two-establishment multiunit. At the service industries total level, it is a three- establishment multiunit. In tables 3a through 6b, data are presented based on receipts/revenue size of firms, employment size of firms, and concentration by largest firms, as well as for single units and multiunit firms (by number of establishments operated). In tables 4a, 4b, 5a, and 5b, only firms which operated the entire year are classified into the various size groups. A firm is considered to have "operated entire year" if any of its establishments at that SIC level operated 10 months or more during the year. Data for firms which reported that none of their establishments operated 10 months or more are separately summarized as "not operated entire year." Single units and multiunits--Data are classified into 10 firm size groups based on the number of establishments operated. A single unit is a firm with only one establishment engaged in economic activities. A multiunit (multiestablishment) is a firm with two establishments or more engaged in economic activities. A multiestablishment firm may, however, operate only one establishment classified in retail trade. Receipts/revenue size--Data are classified into 11 receipts/revenue size groups depending on the value of receipts/revenue reported for 1987. Employment size--Data are classified into 9 employment size groups depending on the number of employees on the payroll during the pay period including March 12. Proprietors, partners, and unpaid family workers were not regarded as employees in determining the employment size of a firm. Concentration of largest firms Data are presented separately for the 4, 8, 20, and 50 largest firms based on total sales LEGAL FORM OF ORGANIZATION Data are presented for individual establishments and firms by legal form of organization for four separate categories. Only establishments of firms subject to Federal Income Tax are included in this table. Since firms which are exempt from Federal Income Tax normally have a corporate legal form of organization, there is not corresponding table for these establishments. For the method of assigning legal form, see Glossary, Legal form of organization. GEOGRAPHIC AREAS COVERED This report series presents data for the United States as a whole. CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES Establishment and Firm Size File Specifications CONTENTS General Data Specifications X-7 File Layout X-7 GENERAL DATA SPECIFICATIONS Data Fields. This file is recorded in dBase III+ format. Numeric data fields contain no alphabetic information. A few fields (those in percentage form) have explicit decimals, unlike corresponding data on tape, which carry only implied decimals. On the other hand, many data items are scaled in thousands or millions, and this is noted only in the file layouts. Any data field which is subject to any special conditions (e.g., suppression to avoid disclosure, not applicable) is preceded by an information flag field which contains explanatory codes. Kind-of-Business and Size Code Labels. Records in the files are specific to a particular kind of business, as identified by the SVC87KB code. The term "kind of business" is used instead of "standard industrial classification" (SIC) because some kind-of-business categories represent either combinations or subdivisions of SIC categories. Titles for each kind of business are available in Appendix C, and also in the file SVC87KB.dbf on the CD-ROM. Kind-of-business and size code titles can be linked to data files using the dBase SET RELATION command. Index Files. This data file has one index file which can be used quickly jump to desired records (e.g., using the dBase FIND command) or to change the sequence of access. Available index files are listed in the abstract. Where noted in the abstract that an index is to the "first record for" a particular type of area, the index can be used during dBase FINDs, but the index must be shut off with SET INDEX TO in order to get access to records other than the first for each area. FILE LAYOUT Most data items have an associated "flag" to describe any special conditions applicable. Flags 1, 2, and 3 indicate that the data are not shown and the corresponding data fields contain zeroes. Flags 3 and 4 correspond to categories which are bracketed in the corresponding printed report. Records with flag 4 carry data summarizing the current record and one or more preceding records which carry a flag of 3. The codes are the same for all flags, but are listed in the record layout only for the first flag. In the geographic identification field in each file, NA fields contain either all zeroes or all 9's. See Geographic Code Structure. For those data fields that are always NA for certain types of records (as shown in the record layout), both the data field and the corresponding information flag contain zeroes.
