TYPE OF FILE: Summary statistics UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION: The universe of these files is operating establishments with one or more paid employees primarily engaged in manufacturing. Auxiliary establishments are not included. Manufacturing is defined as the mechanical or chemical transformation of substances or materials into new products. SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION: These data are exactly the same as shown in the printed Industry Series reports, and the table number is incorporated in each file name (except where noted otherwise below). There is no file corresponding to Industry Series Table 2 (Industry Statistics for Selected States) since those data may be obtained from the Geographic Area Series MC87A1 file. There are three types of files in the industry series: Industry statistics, or establishment-based statistics, are featured in 7 files, MC87I1A to MC87I5B. These files provide the number of establishments, number of employees, payroll, value of shipments, value added, capital expen- ditures, and other statistics for establishments, classified in various tables by the 4-digit SIC in which they are primarily engaged, and, to a lesser extent, by employment-size class, product class specialization, and year. Product statistics are featured in three files, MC87I6A to MC87I6C. Value of product shipments is the primary statistic, although quantity of shipments and number of companies with shipments of $100,000 or more appear in MC87I6A. Shipments are shown by State in MC87IC6B. Materials consumed by kind are featured in one file, MC87I7, including delivered cost and quantity. Several of the data files have footnote files associated with them. GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE: With the exception only of MC87I6B (product classes by state), these files provide data only at the U.S. level. For data for states, metropolitan areas, counties and places, see the Geographic Area Series MC87A1 file. That file is also the only source of summaries for all manufacturing and 2- and 3- digit SIC's. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION: File Structure: dBASE III+ Most files also have dBASE ".NDX" index files and one or more label files that can be linked to them (e.g., with SIC titles). MC87I1A--Historical Statistics and Bridge Tables (87 to 72) Description: RECTYPE 51: 1972 to 1987 data according to 1987 SIC where 72-87 SIC's are comparable (table 1a or 1a-1) RECTYPE 52: 1972 to 1987 data according to 1972 SIC where 72-87 SIC's are not comparable (table 1a-2) RECTYPE 53: 1987 data for 1987 SIC's that changed and their 1972-SIC-based components (table 1c-1) RECTYPE 54: 1987 data for 1972 SIC's that changed and their 1987-SIC-based components (table 1c-2) 1. MC87FOOT (footnotes, see below) MC87FOOT--Footnotes Description: These data-driven footnotes, while published originally only in table 1a, apply to all manufactures tables and files. Each footnote is keyed to the SIC and the name of the data field (FIELD_NAME) that it affects. Most of the footnotes with a FIELD_NAME of "SIC" note change in SIC definition 72- 87. A few denote SIC's where data in value of shipments column actually represent value of production (SIC's 2032, 2033, 2035, 2037, 2038, 2085, 2091, 2092, and 3731.) Data values in MC87I1A that are affected by data- driven footnotes have a flag of 3. Many of these footnotes indicate anomalies that affect the meaningfulness of specialization and coverage ratios. 1. File sequence: RECTYPE by SIC by YR 2. File sequence: Data collected in the census (RECTYPE 55) appear first, followed by data from Current Industrial Reports (RECTYPE 56); by 4-digit SIC within RECTYPE; and by published sequence within SIC. Records for products not specified by kind (n.s.k.) within a 4-digit SIC grouping have a 5th digit of 0, and n.s.k.s within a 5-digit product class end in 00; both appear at the end of the records for the corresponding 4- or 5-digit group out of normal numeric sequence. A few additional 5-digit product classes are presented out of numeric sequence, and 7-digit product code within 5-digit product class not infrequently depart from numeric sequence to allow for bracketing together certain summaries. (When either the MC87I6A.ndx or MC87I6AP.ndx indexes cited below are in use, it may not be possible to discern which products have been bracketed together.) 2. Available index: a. MC87I6A: by record type by 7-digit product b. MC87I6A4: First record for each 4-digit SIC-based group c. MC87I6A5: by record type by 5-digit product class c. CENSUS OF MANUFACTURES--INDUSTRY SERIES File Specifications CONTENTS General Data Specifications XIX-7 File Layout XIX-7 GENERAL DATA SPECIFICATIONS Data Fields. All files are recorded in dBase III+ format. Numeric data fields contain no alphabetic information. A few fields (those in percentage form) have explicit decimals, unlike corresponding data on tape, which carry only implied decimals. On the other hand, many data items are scaled in thousands or millions, and this is noted only in the file layouts. Any data field which is subject to any special conditions (e.g., suppression to avoid disclosure, not applicable) is preceded by an information flag field which contains explanatory codes. Standard Industrial Classification Titles. Records in the files are specific to a particular SIC classification, as identified by the SIC code. Titles for each manufacturing SIC are shown in the file MC87SIC.dbf on the CD-ROM. Labels for employment-size classes and percent estimated from administrative records are presented in the record layouts at the appropriate places, and they are also contained in the file MC87MISC.dbf on the CD-ROM. Titles for each of these labelled variables may be linked to data files using the dBase SET RELATION command, although only one relation can be defined at one time. EXTRACT's "Add Labels" function serves the same purpose. Index Files. Most of these data files have one or more index files that may be used to jump quickly to desired records (e.g., using the dBase FIND command) or to change the sequence of access. Available index files are listed in the abstract. Where noted in the abstract that an index is to the "first record for" a particular type of record, the index can be used during dBase FINDs, but the index must be shut off with SET INDEX TO in order to get access to records other than the first for each geographic area or SIC. FILE LAYOUT Most data items have an associated "flag" to describe any special conditions applicable. Flag 0 indicates normal data. Flag 6 indicates data greater than zero, but rounding to zero in the units displayed. Flag 7 identifies cells that have a relative standard error of 40 percent or more. Flags 1, 2, 4, 5, or 9 indicate the absence of data (e.g., due to disclosure). Flag 8 denotes the cumulation of more than one record into the presented summary. Data fields associated with flags 1 to 6 and 9 contain zeroes. In the geographic identification field in each file, NA fields contain either all zeroes or all 9's. See Geographic Code Structure.
