Washington: The Bureau [producer and distributor], 1993. TYPE OF FILE Summary statistics. UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION The universe of these files is all retail trade establishments with or without payroll. (RC87SS2 is confined to retail establishments without payroll, while RC87SS4 is confined to employers.) SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION This series of files integrates statistics previously published for establishments with and without payroll to yield totals for all retailing. Data are presented in a manner to facilitate comparisons among areas, and to show geographic areas by rank within kind-of-business. The first file, previously published in the Nonemployer Statistics series, compares nonemployer, employer, and all- establishments statistics by kind of business in terms of the number of establishments, sales, and number of unincorporated businesses (sole proprietorships and partnerships) at the national level. The second file shows establishments without payroll classified by sales size of establishment and kind of business, complementing the corresponding statistics for employer establishments in RC87S1.dbf (see chapter V). The third and fourth files cover the data originally published in printed tables 3, 4 and 5, but reorganized so that the data repeated for both the total and employer establishments are included in file 3, and the four data cells repeated for each kind of business within geographic area in tables 4 and 5, covering only employer establishments, appear in separate records in the fourth file. These files include a wide variety of ratios (e.g., retail sales per capita or per employee) and rankings (e.g., metro area rankings for each kind of business). GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE Data are provided for the United States (all files), and for States and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas (CMSAs), and Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSAs) (files RC87SS3 and RC87SS4). This is the only economic census file where 1987 and 1982 data are presented for metro areas defined the same way. (About 1/3 of all metro areas changed boundaries between 1982 and 1987). File Specifications CONTENTS General Data Specifications-XXVI 7 File Layout-----------------XXVI 7 GENERAL DATA SPECIFICATIONS Data Fields. All files are recorded in dBase III+ format. Numeric data fields contain no alphabetic information. A few fields (those in percentage form) have explicit decimals, unlike corresponding data on tape, which carry only implied decimals. On the other hand, many data items are scaled in thousands or millions, and this is noted only in the file layouts. Any data field which is subject to any special conditions (e.g., suppression to avoid disclosure, not applicable) is preceded by an information flag field which contains explanatory codes. Record Sequence and Geographic Coding. Records are arranged with like records together (e.g., U.S. records, followed by State records, followed by MSA records). MSA records do not include State codes. Names for geographic variables are carried in files separate from the data files. Each is indexed, so that geographic names can be accessed in conjunction with the corresponding data values. See the Introduction to this CD-ROM for more information on geographic variables. Kind-of-Business Labels. Records in the each file files are specific to a particular kind of business, as identified by the RTL87KB code. The term "kind of business" is used instead of "standard industrial classification" (SIC) because some kind-of-business categories represent either combinations or subdivisions of SIC categories. Titles for each kind of business are available in Appendix A, and also in the file RTL87KB.dbf on the CD-ROM. Kind-of-business titles can be linked to data files using the dBase SET RELATION command. Index Files. Each data file has one or more index files which can be used to quickly jump to desired records (e.g., using the dBase FIND command) or to change the sequence of access. Available index files are listed in the abstract. Where noted in the abstract that an index is to the "first record for" a particular type of area, the index can be used during dBase FINDs, but the index must be shut off with SET INDEX TO in order to get access to records other than the first for each area. FILE LAYOUT Most data items have an associated "flag" to describe any special conditions applicable. All flags other than `0' indicate that the data are not shown and the corresponding data fields contain zeroes. 1987 Census of Retail Trade--Selected Statistics on CD-ROM DATABASE STRUCTURE File
