Washington: The Bureau [producer and distributor], 1993. TYPE OF FILE Reference information. UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION These files cover the full range of economic activity. SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION These files represent excerpts from the 1987 Industry and Product Classification Manual, a manual intended for use in the classification of establishments by industrial activity for the economic programs of the Bureau of the Census. That document was based on the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual as issued by the Office of Management and Budget. In their present form, including over 20,000 alphabetic descriptions and their corresponding SIC codes, these files can help a data user find a particular SIC (by accessing descriptions alphabetically) and understand the activities primarily associated with it (by accessing descriptions by SIC). Because there are separate entries for each type of activity classified by both 1987 and 1972 SIC systems, these files also allow detailed scrutiny of the types of activities that may have been reclassified between the two systems. Each record includes a sector code (e.g., M for manufacturing, W for wholesaling). For many entries, that code is a critical part of the description. For example, given two entries for ``academic caps and gowns'', the M record relates gives the code for the manufacture of caps and gowns, and the W record identifies their wholesale distribution. Many wholesale, retail, transportation and service industries are subdivided by the Census Bureau into greater detail than in the SIC, as identified in the SICSUFFIX field in the main file. These codes were used in internal processing and are not the same as the kind-of-business codes shown in corresponding data files. The SICSUFFIX field does not include subindustry codes used in census of manufactures file MC87I3A.dbf. The CHK check digit field also has no intrinsic meaning. GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE Since these files include classification information, there is no geographic dimension. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION File Structure: dBASE III+ Most files also have dBASE ``.NDX'' index files and one or more label files that can be linked to them (e.g., with SIC titles).
