This series (RC87SS*.dbf) combines data from the Geographic Area Series and Nonemployer Statistics Series to yield data for all retail trade. A wide variety of ratios and rankings are included. Data are shown for the U.S., States and MSAs. 1987 Census of Manufactures: Industry Series (See chapter XIX.) MC87I6A.dbf Products and Product Classes This file of national data for detailed products and the corresponding footnote file MC87F6A.dbf were not available in time for disc 1D. MC87I1A.dbf Historical Statistics and Bridge Tables MC87I4.dbf Employment Size of Establishment These national files, previously released on CD-ROM 1D, have been augmented to include statistics for the total of all manufacturing industries and for 2-digit SIC major groups, as published in the General Summary publication. The higher level totals do not always agree precisely with sums of records for component 4-digit SICs since the higher level summaries reflect revisions to the detailed numbers tabulated earlier. 1987 Census of Manufactures: Concentration Ratios (See chapter XX.) This national file (MC87C4.dbf) presents for each 2-digit major group and 4-digit industry the total number of companies, the total value of shipments, and the percent of value of shipments accounted for the 4, 8, 20, and 50 largest companies. Historical data are included as far back as comparable industry categories are available, in some cases back to 1935. Analytic Reports: Selected Characteristics of Manufacturing Establishments that Export, 1987 (See chapter XXX.) This file (AREX3_87.dbf) includes the number of establishments that export by two- or three-digit SIC by State, classified by "export intensity" (percent of goods produced that are exported) and, separately, by employment- size class. 1987 Enterprise Statistics, Company Summary (See chapter XXIV.) Most of these files (ES87*.dbf) present national data on the number of companies, establishments, employment, payroll and sales or receipts classified by employment and sales size, legal form of organization, and number of establishments per company. Data are further classified by Enterprise Industry Classification, an adaptation of the SIC system. The tables by employment size and sales size offer the user several options in defining and comparing the small and large businesses. File ES8711.dbf presents the number of companies operating in each State, by sector, and compares the magnitude of in- State and out-of-State operations of those companies. 1987 Survey of Minority-Owned Business Enterprises (See chapter XXIII): Hispanic Origin Asian American, American Indian, and Other Minorities Minority-Owned Businesses - Summary All firms in SMOBE universe (data not in print) In parallel with the data on CD-ROM 1D for Blacks, these files (MB87*.dbf) include data for the United States, States, the District of Columbia, metropolitan areas, counties, and places. National-level data present general statistics by two-digit industry, legal form of organization (sole proprietorships, partnerships, and small corporations), and receipt size and employment size of firm. Data for States and metro areas are confined to general statistics by nine broad economic sectors. Data for counties and places are presented without industry detail. The Summary files provide totals for all minorities together (avoiding the duplication that would occur if one simply added data about Hispanics to data for minority race groups.) CD-ROM 1D included three files for all firms in the SMOBE universe, allowing the calculation of the percent minority in each industry or State. CD-ROM 1E includes additional files for all firms for metro areas, counties and places-- data not published anywhere else. Especially convenient is one summary file (MB87SU04.dbf) that presents for each State, metro area, county and place a record for the total, for each minority, for the summary of all minorities, and for women. Characteristics of Business Owners (See chapter XXV) These files (CBO87*.dbf) present national data on the characteristics of owners and businesses owned by Hispanics, Blacks, other minorities, women, and nonminority males by industry division, receipt size and employment size of firm, and legal form of organization. Owner characteristics include age, marital status, educational background, disability, veteran status, work experience, hours worked, and percent of owner's income derived from the business. Business characteristics include net income, percent women employees, percent minority employees, percent minority customers, percent exports, and franchised businesses, as well as items related to acquisition and financing. DATA FROM ECONOMIC SURVEYS SUBSEQUENT TO 1987 Annual Survey of Manufactures, 1991 (See chapter XXVIII.) Statistics for Industry Groups and Industries (ASMI*.dbf) includes general statistics by 2-, 3- and 4-digit SIC for 1987 to 1991 corresponding to those in MC87I1A.dbf for 1982 to 1987, 1977, and 1972. Value of Product Shipments (ASMP*.dbf) features approximately 1,500 product classes, with annual data for 1982 to 1991, 1977, and 1972. Geographic Area Statistics (ASMA*.dbf) presents general statistics for States by two- and three-digit industry, with comparable data for 1987 to 1991. Analytical Reports: Exports from Manufacturing Establishments, 1989. (See chapter XXX.) Data for 1988 and 1989 have been added to statistics for 1987 that were included on CD-ROM 1D in AREX1_89.dbf and AREX2_89.dbf. The data include the employment and shipments related to both direct and supporting exports, by 3-digit SIC by State. Monthly Retail Trade: Sales and Inventories: 1967 - 1992 (See chapter XXXI.) File RSALES92.dbf shows monthly retail sales by major kind- of-business groups for the United States (1967 to 1992), and by a few selected kind-of-business groups for census regions and divisions, and for the 19 most populous States, 25 metropolitan statistical areas and consolidated metropolitan statistical areas, 15 primary metropolitan statistical areas, and four cities (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia) (most areas summarized 1978 to 1992). 1992 Census of Manufactures/1992 Census of Mineral Industries: Numerical List of Manufactured and Mineral Products (See chapter XXXIII.) These files (MN92N*.dbf) provide a coding manual for assigning 7-digit product codes to manufactured and mineral products. They may also be useful in anticipating the level of detail to be published in 1992 industry series reports, except that disclosure or data quality considerations may require that some of the 7-digit categories be combined. Manufactures Shipments, Inventories and Orders, 1958 to March 1993 (not documented) Time series of these key economic indicators in files M3DATA.dbf and M3RATIO.dbf. CORRECTIONS TO FILES INCLUDED ON CD-ROM 1D 1987 Census of Construction Files CC8701.DBF and CC8703.dbf. A few figures have been corrected to agree with corresponding publications. 1987 Census of Manufactures File MC87A1.dbf. Two 1982 figures (employees and value added) shown for the U.S. and States in MC87A1 (manufactures geographic area statistics) had a misplaced decimal on CD- ROM 1D, so that the data appeared to be ten times too high. File MC87L2CO.dbf. The version of this file on CD-ROM 1D did not have accurate data for the District of Columbia and the first county in Georgia. File MC87LZ2.dbf. This file, containing ZIP code data for manufacturing at the 2-digit SIC level, was originally issued on 1987 Economic Census CD-ROM 2B. On that disc, the summaries for a number of New York ZIPs (11804-12543) were garbled. The file MC87LZ4.dbf on CD-ROM 2B, containing zip data at the 4-digit SIC level, was not affected. File MC87I3A.dbf. This file was corrupted on CD-ROM 1D. This file is the same as previously distributed compressed inside CD1DSUPL.EXE. Auxiliary files for MC87I6B.dbf, MC87I6C.dbf and MC87I7.dbf have been corrected. If you previously installed corrections from CD1DSUPL.EXE, you should erase MC87*.* from the \EXTRACT directory on your hard disk. DOCUMENTATION Two data sets included on CD-ROM 1D were not documented in the corresponding paper documentation. These include: 1987 Census of Mineral Industries: Geographic Area Series (See chapter XXVII) Index to Standard Industrial Classifications, 1987 and 1972 (See chapter XXXII) SOFTWARE Profile2 Profile2 generates a multi-page summary report of data for any State or county. It includes not only data from the censuses of retail trade, wholesale trade and services, as were included in Profile1 available previously, but also from the censuses of manufactures, mineral industries, transportation, and construction industries, and the surveys of minority- and women-owned businesses. Extract CD-ROM 1E includes EXTRACT 1.5. The new features added since the version 1.3 included on CD-ROM 1D are summarized in the ASCII file FEATURES.NEW in the \EXTRACT subdirectory of the CD-ROM. The new feature most obvious to experienced users of economic census discs is that EXTRACT now accommodates a third menu level in the selection of files. This allows the opening catalog to be much cleaner so that the range of data available is more immediately apparent. Install This new utility installs the EXTRACT software and also the auxiliary files required for use with a number of other Census Bureau CD-ROMs, including 1990 Census of Population and Housing: STFs 1A, 1B, 1C, 3A, 3B, 3C, and EEO. U.S. Imports of Merchandise U.S. Exports of Merchandise County Business Patterns, 1990 and prior years U.S.A. Counties, 1992 County and City Data Book, 1988 To obtain auxiliary files for CD-ROMs not included on this list, or to obtain the latest version of EXTRACT, try the Census/BEA Electronic Forum, a bulletin-board system accessible by computer at (301) 763-7554.
