Summary statistics

=>UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION

The universe of these files is establishments primarily engaged in
manufacturing with one or more paid employees.  Both operating
establishments and auxiliary establishments are included.  Manufacturing is
defined as the mechanical or chemical transformation of substances or
materials into new products.

=>SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION

These data are exactly the same as shown in the tables 4 to 8 of the
printed Geographic Area Series reports, and most of table 3 of the printed
General Summary report in the Subject Series.  There are no files
corresponding to Geographic Area Series Tables 1 to 3.  This file provides
the number of establishments, number of employees, payroll, value of
shipments, value added, capital expenditures, and other statistics for
establishments, classified by the 2-, 3-, 4-digit SIC in which they are
primarily engaged.

=>GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

Data are provided for the U.S., states, metropolitan statistical areas
(MSA's), consolidated metropolitan statistical areas (CMSA's), primary
metropolitan statistical areas (PMSA's), counties, and places with 450 or
more manufacturing employees.

File Structure:  dBASE III+

The file also has several dBASE ".NDX" index files and one or more label
files that can be linked to them (e.g., with SIC titles).

MC87A1   General Statistics for States (87, 82), Metro Areas, Counties and
         Places

1.  File sequence:  U.S. records, followed by records for each state,
    MSA/CMSA/PMSA, county, and place.  States and metropolitan areas are
    sequenced alphabetically within the U.S., and counties and places
    appear in alphabetic sequence within state.  Within each geographic
    area, SIC appear in hierarchical sequence.

2.  Available indexes:
    a.  MC87A1CO:  First record for each state and county
    b.  MC87A1PL:  First record for each state and place
    c.  MC87A1MS:  By MSA and PMSA code (This index accesses not only
                   both MSA summaries, but also the counties and places
                   that comprise them.)

1987 Census of Manufactures, Subject Series:  General Summary.  Includes
statistics for manufacturing at the U.S. level included here, plus selected
statistics at the state and MSA levels that represent a small subset of the
statistics in this file.

statistics about manufacturing industries at the national level.
Statistics on products produced by state are also included.  (On 1987

Census of Manufactures, 1987:  Location of Manufacturing Plants.  Provides
frequency counts of manufacturing establishments by employment-size-class
by 4-digit SIC without exception.  Data are shown for the U.S., states,
counties, and places on CD-ROM 1E; and for the U.S., states, and ZIP code
areas on CD-ROM 2B.  [Corresponding data are also on 1987 CD-ROM 1E from
the 1982 and 1977 censuses of manufactures.]

Census of Manufactures, 1982 and 1977:  Geographic Area Series.  Included
on 1987 CD-ROM 1E, but not documented.  Format is generally the same as for
1987 data.

Manufacturing Analytical Report Series:  Exports of Manufacturing
Establishments, 1987.  Includes estimates of the value of manufactured
exports and export-related employment, both for directly exported goods and
for the indirect requirements supporting manufactured exports.  Data are
shown at the 2- and 3-digit SIC level by state.  (On CD-ROM 1E).
