=>UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION

The universe is all retail trade establishments with payroll. 
Establishments with no paid employees, for example, "mom and pop"
stores, are not included in the 1987 Geographic Area Series files,
but are included in the 1987 Nonemployer Statistic Series publications
and 1987 Economic Census CD-ROM 1E.


=>SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION

The information included on the 1987 Geographic Area Series file
of this CD-ROM is the same as that shown in the printed Geographic
Area Series, RC87-A-1 to 52, except that employment and payroll
figures appear by kind of business for small counties and places on
CD-ROM but not in the corresponding printed tables.

This file (RC87A1.dbf) provides selected 1987 data by SIC category. 
Data items include: Establishments, Sales, Annual payroll, First 
quarter payroll, and Employment.


=>GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

Data are provided for the following geographic levels: U.S., States,
Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), Consolidated Metropolitan
Statistical Areas (CMSAs), Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas
(PMSAs), Area Outside Metropolitan Areas by State (non-MA), Counties,
and Places with populations of 2,500 or more as defined for the 1987
Economic Census.


=>SIC/KIND-OF-BUSINESS DETAIL

The 1987 Census of Retail Trade covers retail trade as defined in
the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual.  This
includes establishments classified in Major Groups 52-59.  The
census includes liquor stores operated by State and local
governments; however, all other government-operated businesses are
excluded.  

The Geographic Area Series presents data for selected SIC or kind-of- 
business (KB) codes.  The level of KB detail varies by geography.  The 
KB codes included in each "stub" may be compared in SICKEY87.dbf.
