ANNUAL SURVEY OF MANUFACTURES Abstract =>CITATION Annual Survey of Manufactures on CD-ROM: prepared by the Bureau of the Census. Washington: The Bureau [producer and distributor]. =>TYPE OF FILE Summary statistics =>UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION The universe of these files is all operating establishments with one or more paid employees primarily engaged in manufacturing. This universe includes all establishments classified in the manufacturing Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Codes 2011 through 3999. Auxiliary establishments are included in files ASM_I1A through ASM_I2 as well as ASM_A1 and ASM_A2. Manufacturing is defined as the mechanical or chemical transformation of substances or materials into new products. =>SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION These data are exactly the same as are shown in the printed Annual Survey of Manufactures reports. These reports present statistics on establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing in three publications providing data for related groups of the 459 4-digit industries. The data from these publications are presented in the eight files discussed below. INDUSTRY (establishment-based) STATISTICS are featured in files ASM_I1A through ASM_I3. These files contain data on the number of establishments, employment, payroll, value of shipments, value added, capital expenditures, and other statistics for establishments, classified by the 2-, 3-, and 4- digit SIC in which they are primarily engaged. In addition, industry statistics by state are featured in files ASM_A1 through ASM_A3. These files also contain data on the number of establishments, employment, payroll, value of shipments, value added, capital expenditures, and other statistics for establishments, classified by the 2-, 3-, and 4-digit SIC in which they are primarily engaged. PRODUCT STATISTICS are featured in file ASM_P, which contains data on the value of product shipments by 4- and 5-digit product class code. This file also has a separate footnote file associated with it. =>GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE With the exception of files ASM_A1 through ASM_A3 (Industry Statistics by State), these files provide data only at the U.S. level. For data for metropolitan areas, counties and places, see the 1992 Census of Manufactures Geographic Area Series files. =>SOFTWARE ACCESS EXTRACT - This software system, included on this CD-ROM, provides access to every data item discussed in the Technical Description section of this abstract. The GO92 software is not available for the Annual Survey of Manufactures files. =>RELEASE SCHEDULE The data from the Annual Survey of Manufactures are released on a flow basis, beginning with the products statistics file and ending with the Geographic Area files. For a complete listing of which data are included on this disc, see WHAT'S NEW on the DocView Main Menu. =>RELATED DATA FILES Census of Manufactures, 1992: Final Industry and Summary Series.
