GENERAL CONTRACTORS--INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS AND WAREHOUSES
     (Industry 1541)

     Establishments classified in this industry are primarily
     engaged in the construction of industrial buildings such as
     plants, factories, and warehouses whether industrial or
     commercial.  This includes new work, reconstruction, and
     maintenance and repair.  Establishments primarily engaged in
     the construction of industrial nonbuilding structures (blast
     furnaces, petroleum refineries, etc.) are classified in SIC
     1629, Heavy Construction, Not Elsewhere Classified.  For

     Management and Budget, Executive Office of the President.

     During 1992, the establishments with paid employees
     classified in this industry accounted for $21.0 billion in
     total dollar value of business.  Of this amount, $20.6
     billion were for the value of construction work.  These
     establishments paid out $4.8 billion for materials,
     components, and supplies and $9.6 billion for construction
     work subcontracted to others.  Costs for selected power,
     fuels, and lubricants for the industry were $159 million.
     Value added for 1992 was $6.4 billion.

     There were 7,963 establishments with total employment
     averaging 122,970 during the year.  Total payroll for 1992
     was $3.5 billion.

     Larger establishments with 20 employees or more, while
     representing only 17 percent of the total number of employer
     establishments in this industry accounted for 74 percent of
     all business done.
