SUMMARY OF FINDINGS___________________________________ENTERPRISE STATISTICS =>SCOPE OF THIS REPORT This report displays data collected for 4,610,829 companies with payroll and within the scope of the 1992 Economic Census. An indication of the extent of coverage of the Enterprise Statistics program is presented in table 1, which contains summary data for virtually the entire business universe. In 1992, 19,685,104 companies were included in the United States business universe with employment for all companies included in this universe of 92.4 million. Most of the companies not in the scope of the economic universe do not meet the employment criteria. =>INDUSTRY CHARACTERISTICS In 1992, there were 4,610,829 companies within the scope of the Economic Census, Company Summary, that employed 86.9 million people. The service sector made up the largest single component accounting for just under 36 percent of the total number of companies in the universe. The retail sector was next with 23 percent of the total. The manufacturing sector accounted for only 7 percent of the total number of companies, but it led all sectors with 28 percent of sales and receipts. The Eating and Drinking Places at the enterprise industry category level (EIC 58) employed the greatest number of people 6,930,938 while Grocery Stores (EIC 54.1) had the largest volume of sales and receipts with approximately 360 billion. The ten enterprise industry categories accounting for the largest dollar volume of sales and receipts for companies in 1992 are summarized in table A. Table A. Companies primarily classified in construction, wholesale trade, and service industries with less than 100 employees accounted for more than 56 percent of the receipts in these areas. By contrast, less than 12 percent of the manufacturing division sales were generated by companies employing fewer than 100 employees, while 71 percent of their total sales and receipts came from companies with over 1,000 employees. See figure 1 for a percentage distribution of companies and their sales and receipts by employment size classes. =>ANNUAL PAYROLL Payroll per employee varied markedly across industries. Companies with receipts of greater than $ 1 billion a year paid their employees an average of $30,771, while companies with receipts of less than $ 1 million paid their employees an average of only $22,364 per year. Mineral industries recorded the highest payroll per employee at $34,280 followed by Finance, Insurance and Real Estate with $31,561. At the other end of the spectrum, retail trade companies averaged just $13,152 per employee. See figure 2 for average annual payroll per employee by industry section. =>GEOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS California had the largest number of companies with 568,686 and also employed the largest number of employees, 9.6 million. These companies operated 690,960 establishments in California. New York was second in number of companies with 371,479 and 427,926 establishments, respectively. Table B shows the number of companies and the total employment figures for the top ten ranking states in the nation. Table B.
