FILE ABSTRACT______________________________MINORITY-/WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES =>CITATIONS Survey of Minority-Owned Business Enterprises (SMOBE) on CD-ROM, 1992: [machine-readable data file] / prepared by the Bureau of the Census. -Washington: The Bureau [producer and distributor], 1995. Survey of Women-Owned Businesses (WOB) on CD-ROM, 1992: [machine-readable data file] / prepared by the Bureau of the Census. -Washington: The Bureau [producer and distributor], 1995. =>TYPE OF FILE Summary statistics. =>UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION The universe is all firms for which any of the following Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax forms were filed during 1992: Form 1040, Schedule C (individual proprietorship or self-employed person). Form 1065 (partnership); Form 1120S (subchapter S corporation). A firm is classified as minority- or women-owned if the sole owner or at least half of the partners or shareholders were members of the specified minority or gender. The specific minorities groups (and women) covered are: Asian, Pacific Islander, American Indians and Alaska Natives Blacks Hispanics Women including total minorities and minority gender. This universe differs from the universe of economic census figures by: 1) the exclusion of regular "C" corporations--IRS Form 1120 (U.S. data for C corporations was compiled in the women publication. In the economy, these corporations represent about one tenth of the firms, and approximately three-quarters of the sales and receipts.) 2) the inclusion of nonemployers (companies with no annual payroll) and certain other very small firms (minimum sales of $500 vs. $1,000) 3) the inclusion of unclassified businesses and businesses in the agricultural services, forestry and fishing sectors not covered in the economic census, and 4) the report of data in terms of companies (firms) rather than establishments. For more information on data comparison, see "Universe Description" (or "Coverage, Methodology, and Estimates" for further details). =>SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION These files present data on industry groups or sectors of the economy for all firms in the universe, and also for firms with paid employees. GO92 - This software system, also included on this CD-ROM, provides a more "user-friendly" access to selected statistics from the economic censuses. These statistics include the number of establishments, number of employees and sales. GO92 allows the user to select any geographic area and show data by kind of business, or to select any kind of business and show data for all geographic areas of a particular type, for example, counties within a specified state. =>RELEASE SCHEDULE Data released on this disc are listed in the "What's New" menu. For upcoming files this menu also lists the schedule for future releases. =>RELATED DATA FILES The 1992 Characteristics of Business Owners Survey (CBO) provides the only national data available for comparing selected economic, demographic, and sociological characteristics among minority, women and nonminority male business owners and their businesses. This data set greatly expands the information available on the aforementioned groups. CBO is based on a sample of SMOBE/WOB respondents and is, in part, underwritten by the Small Business Administration (SBA). NOTE: Data from the 1992 Economic Census does NOT directly relate to the 1992 SMOBE/WOB/CBO data, including universe (all firms) data. This is due to the different data universes employed to gather each representative data set. (See "Universe Description" or "Coverage, Methodology, and Estimates" for further details.) =>FILE CHARACTERISTICS File structure: dBase III+ /tm Data are structured into 3 files and the "C" Corporation file: MB92A - National Totals by Industry MB92B - State, County, Place, and Metro Area Totals MB92C - National Totals by Size and Type (Legal form of organization, Receipts size, and Employment size) within each of the above data files (MB92A, MB92B, or MB92C) are: All firms (universe of SMOBE/WOB/CBO) Women-owned firms Black-owned firms Hispanic-owned firms Firms owned by Asians, Pacific Islanders, American Indian and Alaska Natives Summary of total minorities, including gender (minority men & minority women) MB92CORP - "C" Corporations--Total and Women: 1992 Note that all files also have one or more dBase index files (.ndx).
