ESTIMATES OF TOTAL FIRMS___________________MINORITY-/WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES =>ALL MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESSES Estimates of Total Firms Owned by All Minorities In 1992, there were 2,149,184 firms with $210.0 billion in receipts owned by minorities as shown in table A. Detailed geographic and industry estimates are available in tables 1 to 9 of this report for 1,965,565 (92 percent) of these firms. Data for these firms were obtained from a sample of firms identified as possibly minority-owned based on race and ethnicity codes from Social Security records and by matching surnames of owners to lists of minority surnames from the most recent population census of the United States. A small supplemental sample of the remaining firms was mailed to obtain estimates of the number of minority-owned firms that were not identified as possibly minority using the Social Security codes and surname information. Of the approximately 11.5 million firms eligible for this supplemental sample, about 150,000 were sampled and mailed. From responses to this mailout, we estimate an additional 183,619 firms or 8.5 percent to be minority-owned. The supplemental sample was not large enough to support the detailed estimates presented in tables 1 to 9. The only estimates for minority- owned businesses identified in the supplemental sample are presented in table C. Table A provides estimates for all minority-owned firms by industry group. Table B includes those firms identified as possibly minority-owned prior to sampling. Detailed estimates for them are available in tables 1 to 9. Table C presents data for minority-owned firms not included in Tables 1 to 9. Data for these firms were obtained from a sample of firms identified as possibly minority-owned based on race and ethnicity codes from Social Security records and by matching surnames of owners to lists of minority surnames from the most recent population census of the United States. A small supplemental sample of the remaining firms was mailed to obtain estimates of the number of API/AIAN-owned firms that were not identified as possibly minority using the Social Security codes and surname information. Of the approximately 11.5 million firms eligible for this supplemental sample, about 150,000 were sampled and mailed. From responses to this mailout, we estimate an additional 99,271 firms or 14 percent of the total 705,697 firms to be API/AIAN-owned. The supplemental sample was not large enough to support the detailed estimates presented in tables 1 to 9. The only estimates for API/AIAN-owned businesses iden-tified in the supplemental sample are presented in tables C and G. Table A provides estimates for all API/AIAN-owned firms by racial group.
