Description of Industries and Summary of Findings INDUSTRY 3661, TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH APPARATUS This industry is made up of establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing wire telephone and telegraph equipment. Also included in this industry are establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing modems and other telephone and telegraph communications interface equipment. Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing cellular radio telephones are classified in industry 3663. Products of this industry also are collected in the Current Industrial Report (CIR) MA36P, Communication Equipment. The 1992 definition of this industry is the same as that used in the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. The SIC number and title also are the same. In the 1992 Census of Manufactures, Industry 3661, Telephone and Telegraph Apparatus, had employment of 91.0 thousand. The leading States in employment in 1992 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, and Illinois. This represents a shift from 1987 when North Carolina, California, Massachusetts, and Illinois were the leading States in employment. The total value of shipments for establishments classified in this industry was $20.5 billion. Establishments in virtually all industries ship secondary products as well as products primary to the industry in which they are classified and have some miscellaneous receipts, such as resales and contract receipts. Industry 3661 shipped $17.5 billion of telephone and telegraph apparatus considered primary to the industry, $976.8 million of secondary products, and had $2.0 billion of miscellaneous receipts, resales, and contract work. Thus, the ratio of primary products to the total of both secondary and primary products shipped by establishments in this industry was 95 percent (specialization ratio). In 1987, the specialization ratio was 96 percent. Establishments in this industry also accounted for 96 percent of products considered primary to the industry no matter where they were actually produced (coverage ratio). In 1987, the coverage ratio also was 96 percent. The products primary to industry 3661, no matter in what industry they were produced, appear in file MC92F6A and aggregate to $18.3 billion. For further explanation of specialization and coverage ratios, see file MC92F5B and the appendixes. The total cost of materials, services, and fuels and energy used by establishments classified in the telephone and telegraph apparatus industry amounted to $8.2 billion. Data on specific materials consumed appear in file MC92F7. Single-establishment companies in this industry with less than 15 employees were excluded from the mail portion of the census. The data for these establishments (and a small number of larger establishments whose reports were not received at the time the data were tabulated) were obtained from administrative records of other agencies or developed from industry averages. These establishments accounted for 3 percent of the total value of shipments. INDUSTRY 3663, RADIO AND TELEVISION COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT This industry is made up of establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing radio and television broadcasting and communications equipment. Important products of this industry are closed-circuit and cable television equipment; studio equipment; light communications equipment; transmitters, transceivers and receivers (except household and automotive); cellular radio telephones; communication antennas; receivers; RF power amplifiers; and fixed and mobile radio systems. Establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing household audio and video equipment are classified in industry 3651; those manufacturing intercommunication equipment are classified in industry 3669; and those manufacturing consumer radio and television receiving antennas are classified in industry 3679. Products of this industry also are collected in the Current Industrial Report (CIR) MA36P, Communication Equipment. The 1992 definition of this industry is the same as that used in the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. The SIC number and title also are the same. In the 1992 Census of Manufactures, Industry 3663, Radio and Television Communications Equipment, had employment of 124.4 thousand. The employment figure was 1 percent below the 126.0 thousand reported in 1987. Compared with 1991, employment was unchanged. The 1991 data are based on the Census Bureau's annual survey of manufactures (ASM), which is a sample survey conducted each year between censuses. The leading States in employment in 1992 were Florida, California, and Massachusetts. This represents a shift from 1987 when California, Florida, Texas, and Illinois were the leading States in employment. The total value of shipments for establishments classified in this industry was $19.5 billion. Establishments in virtually all industries ship secondary products as well as products primary to the industry in which they are classified and have some miscellaneous receipts, such as resales and contract receipts. Industry 3663 shipped $15.9 billion of radio and television communications equipment considered primary to the industry, $2.2 billion of secondary products, and had $1.4 billion of miscellaneous receipts, resales, and contract work. Thus, the ratio of primary products to the total of both secondary and primary products shipped by establishments in this industry was 88 percent (specialization ratio). In 1987, the specialization ratio was also 88 percent. Establishments in this industry also accounted for 90 percent of products considered primary to the industry no matter where they were actually produced (coverage ratio). In 1987, the coverage ratio was 87 percent. The products primary to industry 3663, no matter in what industry they were produced, appear in file MC92F6A and aggregate to $17.7 billion. For further explanation of specialization and coverage ratios, see file MC92F5B and the appendixes. The total cost of materials, services, and fuels and energy used by establishments classified in the radio and television communications equipment industry amounted to $7.3 billion. These establishments accounted for 5 percent of the total value of shipments. INDUSTRY 3669, COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT, N.E.C. This industry is made up of establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing communications and related equipment, not elsewhere classified. Important products of this industry are intercommunication equipment, traffic signaling equipment, and fire and burglar alarm apparatus. Products of this industry also are collected in the Current Industrial Report (CIR) MA36P, Communication Equipment. The 1992 definition of this industry is the same as that used in the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. The SIC number and title also are the same. In the 1992 Census of Manufactures, Industry 3669, Communications Equipment, N.E.C., had employment of 22.5 thousand. The employment figure was 3 percent above the 21.9 thousand reported in 1987.
