Qualifications of the Data This report, from the 1992 Census of Manufactures, presents statistics on the number of manufacturing establishments by employment-size range by 2- and 4-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code for the United States, and by State, County, Place, and 5-digit ZIP Code. These data may differ slightly from those previously published in Table 9 of the Geographic Area Series reports due to minor corrections identified after the Geographic Area Series was issued. These small revisions are documented in Table A below. While files and software on this disc identify place names associated with each ZIP Code, the user should not confuse data by ZIP Code with data actually reported by place. ZIP Codes rarely observe the legal limits of places. In some cases a ZIP code may be associated with a nearby place name entirely outside its boundaries. The name is provided only as a convenience to users not already familiar with the locations of ZIP Codes. The user of these ZIP Code data should be aware of that census records did not include a ZIP code consistent with the state location of 888 establishments, most of them very small. These establishments have been assigned a ZIP Code of 99999. While these establishments reflect a small percentage of the total number of establishments (888 of 381696, or 0.2%), they can affect the data for small ZIP Codes. Table B below summarizes the affect that these "unclassified" establishments have on the state totals by employment size range. For the detailed data by 2- and 4-digit SIC code, see the data files. Note that all establishments have been assigned to the appropriate places and counties in the MC92L2 and MC92L4 files. Table A.
