Description of Industries and Summary of Findings INDUSTRY 1411, DIMENSION STONE This industry is made up of establishments primarily engaged in mining or quarrying dimension stone. Also included are establishments engaged in producing rough blocks and slabs. Establishments primarily engaged in mining dimension soapstone or in mining or quarrying and shaping grindstones, pulpstones, millstones, burrstones, and sharpening stones are classified in industry 1499, Miscellaneous Nonmetallic Minerals, Except Fuels. Establishments primarily engaged in dressing (shaping, polishing, or otherwise finishing) blocks and slabs are classified in manufacturing, Industry 3281, Cut Stone and Stone Products. Nepheline syenite mining operations are classified in Industry 1459, Clay, Ceramic and Refractory Minerals, Not Elsewhere Classified. Establishments classified in Industry 1411, Dimension Stone, represent quarries with or without dressing plants operated as part of the same establishment if the establishment was primarily shipping rough dimension stone. In the 1992 Census of Mineral Industries, Industry 1411, Dimension Stone, had employment of 1.4 thousand. The employment figure was 8 percent above the 1.3 thousand reported in 1987. The total value of shipments and receipts for the industry was $98.9 million in 1992. The value added by mining was $76.7 million in 1992. Value added per employee was $54.8 thousand in 1992; it was $49.8 thousand in 1987. The total cost of supplies used by establishments classified in this industry amounted to $26.6 million, while the cost of selected supplies, minerals received for preparation, and purchased machinery installed amounted to $15.3 million and is shown in file NC92F7. The total cost of fuels used in this industry amounted to $3.5 million in 1992. Data on specific fuels used also appear in file NC92F7. Single-establishment companies in this industry with up to 5 employees were excluded from the mail portion of the census. The data for these establishments (and a small number of larger establishments whose reports were not received at the time the data were tabulated) were imputed as described above. These establishments accounted for 36 percent of the total value of shipments and receipts.
