Description of Industries and Summary of Findings INDUSTRY 1442, CONSTRUCTION SAND AND GRAVEL This industry is made up of establishments primarily engaged in operating sand and gravel pits and dredges, and in washing, screening, or otherwise preparing sand and gravel for construction uses. In the 1992 Census of Mineral Industries, Industry 1442, Construction Sand and Gravel, had employment of 27.1 thousand. The employment figure was 6 percent below the 28.9 thousand reported in 1987. The total value of shipments and receipts for the industry was $2.7 billion in 1992. The value added by mining was $2.0 billion in 1992. Value added per employee was $75.3 thousand in 1992; it was $69.6 thousand in 1987. The total cost of supplies used by establishments classified in this industry amounted to $942.5 million, while the cost of selected supplies, minerals received for preparation, and purchased machinery installed amounted to $570.3 million and is shown in file NC92F7. The total cost of fuels used in this industry amounted to $128.2 million in 1992. Data on specific fuels used also appear in file NC92F7. Single-establishment companies in this industry with up to 5 employees were excluded from the mail portion of the census. The data for these establishments (and a small number of larger establishments whose reports were not received at the time the data were tabulated) were imputed as described above. These establishments accounted for 21 percent of the total value of shipments and receipts. Establishments of single-establishment companies with 6 to 20 employees were mailed a short census form requesting summary data on employment, payroll, costs, capital expenditures, assets, and products. INDUSTRY 1446, INDUSTRIAL SAND This industry is made up of establishments primarily engaged in operating sand pits and dredges, and in washing, screening, and otherwise preparing sand for uses other than construction, such as glassmaking, molding, and abrasives. In the 1992 Census of Mineral Industries, Industry 1446, Industrial Sand, had employment of 3.2 thousand. The employment figure was 18 percent below the 3.9 thousand reported in 1987. The total value of shipments and receipts for the industry was $410.8 million in 1992. The value added by mining was $277.8 million in 1992. Value added per employee was $86.8 thousand in 1992; it was $79.1 thousand in 1987. The total cost of supplies used by establishments classified in this industry amounted to $158.7 million, while the cost of selected supplies, minerals received for preparation, and purchased machinery installed amounted to $87.7 million and is shown in file NC92F7. The total cost of fuels used in this industry amounted to $24.8 million in 1992. Data on specific fuels used appear in file NC92F7. Single-establishment companies in this industry with up to 8 employees were excluded from the mail portion of the census. The data for these establishments (and a small number of larger establishments whose reports were not received at the time the data were tabulated) were imputed as described above. These establishments accounted for 9 percent of the total value of shipments and receipts.
