=>UNIVERSE DESCRIPTION

The universe is all retail trade establishments with payroll. 
Establishments with no paid employees, for example, "mom and pop"
stores, are not included in the Establishment and Firm Size files, but
are included in the Nonemployer Statistic Series.


=>SUBJECT-MATTER DESCRIPTION

The information included in the Establishment and Firm Size files of
this CD-ROM is the same as that shown in the printed Establishment and Firm
Size report RC92-S-1.  

Establishment statistics are presented by sales size and by employment size;
statistics for firms, by sales size (including concentration by largest
firms), by employment size, by number of establishments operated (single
units and multiunits), and by legal form of organization.  Statistics are
presented for establishments with payroll by kind of business on the number of
establishments, sales, annual payroll, first quarter payroll, and employment.

=>GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

Data are provided for the United States. 


=>SIC/KIND-OF-BUSINESS DETAIL

The 1992 Census of Retail Trade covers retail trade as defined in
the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Manual.  This
includes establishments classified in Major Groups 52-59.  The
census does include liquor stores operated by state and local
governments; however, all other government-operated businesses are
excluded.

Census of Retail Trade, 1992:  Nonemployer Statistics (RC92N1.dbf, RC92N2.dbf,
RC92N3.dbf) provides statistics on the sales size and legal form of
organization of establishments without paid employees.
