1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEAGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS ARIZONA FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Arizona's 28,695 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $16.6 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 56.2 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $2.4 billion, compared with $1.4 billion in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were hotels and motels with $1.4 billion in receipts, computer programming, data processing, and other computer related services with $1.2 billion, and legal services with $1.2 billion. There were 299,282 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 243,999 employees in 1987. Large employers included hotels and motels with 33,896 employees, help supply services with 27,702 employees, and offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 21,119 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Arizona's 2,636 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $5.4 billion and expenses of $5.1 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 68.9 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $3.6 billion, compared with $2.3 billion in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were individual and family social services with revenue of $256.3 million, and nursing and personal care facilities with $163.4 million. There were 93,905 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 75,849 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 53,483 employees; individual and family social services, 5,854 employees; and civic, social, and fraternal associations, 5,058 employees.
