1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS DELAWARE FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Delaware's 5,302 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $2.8 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 33.9 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $402.1 million, compared with $250.3 million in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were legal services with $308.9 million in receipts, computer programming, data processing, and other computer related services with $122.7 million, and hotels and motels with $108.0 million. There were 54,186 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 46,209 employees in 1987. Large employers included help supply services with 4,593 employees, offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 3,746 employees, and nursing and personal care facilities with 3,091 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Delaware's 648 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $1.3 billion and expenses of $1.3 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 81.2 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $879.4 million, compared with $448.5 million in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were nursing and personal care facilities with revenue of $53.0 million, and individual and family social services with $46.2 million. There were 26,255 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 21,670 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 14,114 employees; civic, social, and fraternal associations, 1,851 employees; and nursing and personal care facilities, 1,726 employees.
