1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS FLORIDA FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Florida's 119,962 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $74.3 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 63.3 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $10.4 billion, compared with $6.0 billion in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were hotels and motels with $6.0 billion in receipts, legal services with $5.4 billion, and hospitals with $4.8 billion. There were 1,273,956 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 974,746 employees in 1987. Large employers included help supply services with 165,341 employees, hotels and motels with 130,620 employees, and offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 93,871 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Florida's 8,434 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $17.9 billion and expenses of $16.9 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 81.0 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $11.7 billion, compared with $6.7 billion in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were nursing and personal care facilities with revenue of $669.1 million, and civic, social, and fraternal associations with $668.4 million. There were 317,800 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 243,844 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 175,737 employees; nursing and personal care facilities, 18,634 employees; and individual and family social services, 17,828 employees.
