1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS MAINE FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Maine's 8,987 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $3.6 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 55.0 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $493.9 million, compared with $305.4 million in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were legal services with $343.9 million in receipts, hotels and motels with $323.8 million, and nursing and personal care facilities with $263.0 million. There were 68,058 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 57,526 employees in 1987. Large employers included nursing and personal care facilities with 9,769 employees, hotels and motels with 6,505 employees, and offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 5,033 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Maine's 1,678 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $2.1 billion and expenses of $2.0 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 64.9 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $1.3 billion, compared with $812.3 million in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were individual and family social services with revenue of $108.0 million, and nursing and personal care facilities with $86.5 million. There were 44,951 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 39,127 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 24,588 employees; individual and family social services, 3,225 employees; and nursing and personal care facilities, 3,169 employees.
