1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS MISSOURI FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Missouri's 36,361 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $20.3 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 48.4 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $2.6 billion, compared with $1.6 billion in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were computer programming, data processing, and other computer related services with $1.6 billion in receipts, legal services with $1.5 billion, and engineering services with $1.0 billion. There were 373,532 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 323,658 employees in 1987. Large employers included nursing and personal care facilities with 34,082 employees, help supply services with 32,924 employees, and hotels and motels with 24,714 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Missouri's 4,354 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $9.5 billion and expenses of $8.9 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 55.5 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $6.7 billion, compared with $4.4 billion in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were civic, social, and fraternal associations with revenue of $298.8 million, and nursing and personal care facilities with $292.3 million. There were 194,873 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 163,274 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 122,050 employees; nursing and personal care facilities, 11,670 employees; and job training and vocational rehabilitation services, 10,485 employees.
