MISSISSIPPI

FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX

Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Mississippi's
12,767 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that
were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $5.5 billion.
The 1992 data represent an increase of 64.7 percent in receipts for the
State since 1987.

For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and
clinics of medical doctors totaled $968.5 million, compared with $649.8
million in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were
legal services with $504.5 million in receipts, nursing and personal
care facilities with $299.9 million, and hospitals with $284.2 million.

There were 108,222 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in
service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with
84,293 employees in 1987. Large employers included nursing and personal
care facilities with 12,079 employees, offices and clinics of doctors
of medicine with 10,101 employees, and help supply services with 8,059
employees.

ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX

Data for the census show that Mississippi's 1,642 service industries
establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were
exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $3.0 billion and
expenses of $2.8 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase
of 61.0 percent in expenses since 1987.

For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled
$2.3 billion, compared with $1.4 billion in 1987. Other leading
classifications in 1992 were civic, social, and fraternal associations
with revenue of $57.3 million, and individual and family social
services with $57.1 million.

There were 60,941 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March
1992, compared with 55,920 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 44,958
employees; individual and family social services, 1,903 employees; and
civic, social, and fraternal associations, 1,604 employees.
