1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS MONTANA FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Montana's 6,879 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $2.2 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 56.7 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $336.9 million, compared with $225.1 million in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were hotels and motels with $262.0 million in receipts, legal services with $171.0 million, and offices and clinics of dentists with $96.3 million. There were 44,019 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 36,499 employees in 1987. Large employers included hotels and motels with 6,675 employees, offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 3,706 employees, and nursing and personal care facilities with 3,116 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Montana's 1,350 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $1.2 billion and expenses of $1.2 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 60.1 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $845.0 million, compared with $553.6 million in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were individual and family social services with revenue of $48.8 million, and nursing and personal care facilities with $40.3 million. There were 29,328 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 23,356 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 15,490 employees; nursing and personal care facilities, 1,776 employees; and individual and family social services, 1,769 employees.
