1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS NEW MEXICO FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that New Mexico's 10,661 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $6.2 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 46.6 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $620.8 million, compared with $414.3 million in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were hotels and motels with $467.2 million in receipts, engineering services with $451.1 million, and legal services with $379.2 million. There were 111,481 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 88,313 employees in 1987. Large employers included hotels and motels with 12,973 employees, management and public relations services with 12,292 employees, and help supply services with 8,324 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that New Mexico's 1,480 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $1.9 billion and expenses of $1.8 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 70.0 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $1.2 billion, compared with $755.8 million in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were civic, social, and fraternal associations with revenue of $77.1 million, and nursing and personal care facilities with $70.4 million. There were 42,949 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 30,914 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 22,672 employees; nursing and personal care facilities, 2,629 employees; and civic, social, and fraternal associations, 2,228 employees.
