1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS NEW YORK FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that New York's 133,667 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $103.0 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 38.7 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $9.9 billion, compared with $6.2 billion in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were legal services with $14.3 billion in receipts, computer programming, data processing, and other computer related services with $6.9 billion, and accounting, auditing, and bookkeeping services with $4.2 billion. There were 1,344,480 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 1,292,626 employees in 1987. Large employers included help supply services with 103,981 employees, legal services with 101,755 employees, and offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 85,282 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that New York's 16,321 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $49.0 billion and expenses of $47.5 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 64.4 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $26.8 billion, compared with $16.6 billion in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were nursing and personal care facilities with revenue of $2.8 billion, and individual and family social services with $2.6 billion. There were 871,264 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 744,126 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 429,785 employees; nursing and personal care facilities, 69,139 employees; and individual and family social services, 57,339 employees.
