1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS OHIO FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Ohio's 69,909 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $40.8 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 54.4 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $5.7 billion, compared with $3.9 billion in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were computer programming, data processing, and other computer related services with $3.6 billion in receipts, legal services with $2.8 billion, and nursing and personal care facilities with $2.2 billion. There were 758,374 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 648,361 employees in 1987. Large employers included help supply services with 87,182 employees, nursing and personal care facilities with 75,634 employees, and offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 56,400 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Ohio's 9,283 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $20.1 billion and expenses of $19.1 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 55.4 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $13.9 billion, compared with $9.2 billion in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were nursing and personal care facilities with revenue of $838.0 million, and individual and family social services with $675.2 million. There were 393,879 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 339,537 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 232,413 employees; nursing and personal care facilities, 29,161 employees; and job training and vocational rehabilitation services, 20,334 employees.
