1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS TEXAS FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Texas' 123,560 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $84.8 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 66.4 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $9.5 billion, compared with $6.1 billion in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were legal services with $7.6 billion in receipts, computer programming, data processing, and other computer related services with $6.8 billion, and engineering services with $6.3 billion. There were 1,430,220 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 1,060,911 employees in 1987. Large employers included help supply services with 188,915 employees, offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 84,238 employees, and nursing and personal care facilities with 79,289 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Texas's 10,897 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $21.7 billion and expenses of $20.4 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 80.2 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $14.7 billion, compared with $8.2 billion in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were civic, social, and fraternal associations with revenue of $786.5 million, and individual and family social services with $580.9 million. There were 397,529 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 318,616 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 229,740 employees; home health care services, 26,175 employees; and civic, social, and fraternal associations, 21,906 employees.
