1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS VERMONT FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Vermont's 5,025 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $1.9 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 43.8 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $187.6 million, compared with $116.6 million in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were hotels and motels with $312.7 million in receipts, legal services with $142.0 million, and computer programming, data processing, and other computer related services with $100.2 million. There were 37,134 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 36,674 employees in 1987. Large employers included hotels and motels with 8,531 employees, nursing and personal care facilities with 3,117 employees, and offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 2,093 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Vermont's 1,094 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $1.0 billion and expenses of $985.6 million in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 75.0 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $545.7 million, compared with $330.8 million in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were clinics of doctors of medicine and dentists with revenue of $59.7 million, and civic, social, and fraternal associations with $42.2 million. There were 21,873 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 18,781 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 9,782 employees; individual and family social services, 1,342 employees; and civic, social, and fraternal associations, 1,161 employees.
