1992 CENSUS OF SERVICE INDUSTRIES GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES SUMMARY OF FINDINGS WISCONSIN FIRMS SUBJECT TO FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data from the 1992 Census of Service Industries show that Wisconsin's 31,965 service industries establishments of firms with payroll that were subject to Federal income tax had receipts totaling $15.6 billion. The 1992 data represent an increase of 55.4 percent in receipts for the State since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, receipts of offices and clinics of medical doctors totaled $2.4 billion, compared with $1.8 billion in 1987. Other leading service kinds of business in 1992 were legal services with $1.1 billion in receipts, computer programming, data processing, and other computer related services with $815.0 million, and engineering services with $750.9 million. There were 316,797 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in service industries in the State as of mid-March 1992, compared with 265,298 employees in 1987. Large employers included help supply services with 29,390 employees, offices and clinics of doctors of medicine with 27,386 employees, and nursing and personal care facilities with 24,444 employees. ORGANIZATIONS EXEMPT FROM FEDERAL INCOME TAX Data for the census show that Wisconsin's 4,769 service industries establishments of firms and other organizations with payroll that were exempt from Federal income tax had revenue totaling $8.7 billion and expenses of $8.1 billion in 1992. The 1992 data represent an increase of 72.8 percent in expenses since 1987. For establishments with payroll in 1992, revenue of hospitals totaled $5.2 billion, compared with $3.2 billion in 1987. Other leading classifications in 1992 were clinics of doctors of medicine and dentists with revenue of $638.8 million, and nursing and personal care facilities with $505.0 million. There were 184,912 paid employees (full- and part-time) as of mid-March 1992, compared with 148,537 employees in 1987. Hospitals had 94,916 employees; nursing and personal care facilities, 20,453 employees; and job training and vocational rehabilitation services, 12,358 employees.
