SUMMARY OF FINDINGS The 1992 Census of Transportation, Communications, and Utilities for the first time collected data for the communications, electric, gas and sanitary service industries. In addition, the 1992 census expanded coverage of transportation industries to include passenger transportation, air transportation, and pipeline transportation of petroleum products. The data cited in this Summary of Findings represent establishments of firms with payroll only. Nonemployer data are presented in a separate report of this series (UC92-N-1). For transportation industries previously covered by the 1987 Census, data for 1992 show that the trucking and courier services industry in the United States had revenues of $135.4 billion, an increase of 37.6 percent over the 5-year period. Establishments in water transportation had revenues totaling $29.2 billion, an increase of 41.5 percent, while revenues of travel agents totaled $7.0 billion and arrangers of freight and cargo totaled $9.2 billion, which were increases of 33.4 and 39.3 percent, respectively. There were 1,484,655 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in the trucking and courier services in the United States as of mid-March 1992, compared to 1,371,323 in 1987. Travel agents had 149,140 employees in 1992, compared to 131,131 in 1987; while arrangers of freight and cargo had 106,979 employees compared to 97,360 employees in 1987. For transportation industries covered for the first time, in 1992, data showed that the passenger transportation industry in the United States had revenues of $12.6 billion. Other leading kinds of business in the expanded coverage of transportation were air courier services with revenues of $11.0 billion, and pipelines, except natural gas, with revenues of $7.1 billion. Communications industry data show telephone communications with revenues of $171.6 billion in 1992. Revenues of radio broadcasting stations totaled $6.9 billion; television broadcasting stations with $21.4 billion; and cable television with $27.5 billion. There were 928,245 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in telephone communications in the United States as of mid-March 1992. Radio broadcasting stations had 112,385 employees; television broadcasting stations, 109,370 employees; and cable television, 128,963 employees. Electric, gas, and sanitary service industry data show electric services with revenues of $145.6 billion in 1992. Revenues of natural gas transmission and distribution totaled $75.7 billion; combination electric and gas services, $70.7 billion; and sanitary services with $15.2 billion. There were 425,285 paid employees (full- and part-time) working in electric services as of mid-March 1992. Natural gas transmission and distribution had 147,923 employees; combination electric and gas services, 222,223 employees; and sanitary services, 92,467 employees.
