Changes to Counties or County Equivalents
The Census 2000 TIGER/Line files are based on the boundaries of counties or statistically equivalent entities as reported to the U.S. Census Bureau to be legally in effect on January 1, 2000.
Between the 1990 Census and Census 2000, there were several changes to the universe of county or statistically equivalent entities.

The Skagway-Yakutat-Angoon Census Area became Skagway-Hoonah-Angoon Census Area (02232), and Yakutat City and Borough (02282).
Denali Borough (02068) was created from parts of Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area and Southeast Fairbanks Census Area.
In Florida:
Florida officially changed Dade County's legal name to Miami-Dade County, Florida (12086).
In Montana:
The portion of Yellowstone National Park in Montana that the U.S. Census Bureau had been showing as the statistical equivalent of a county in the 1990 census was legally annexed by referendum to Gallatin (30031) and Park Counties, Montana (30067).
In Virginia:
The City of South Boston, Virginia no longer is an independent city. It is now part of Halifax County, Virginia (51083).
