In the 1987-2002 censuses, the employment data for construction was calculated as the sum of the individuals on the payrolls of construction establishments who were on the payroll during any part of the pay periods including the 12th of March, May, August, and November, divided by four.
For the current census, the employment data for construction is being calculated as the sum of establishment averages of nonleased employees or workers on the annual payroll. The change in the calculation of the employment data is to create better comparability between micro detail and macro tabulations of construction employment data.
Includes all nonleased individuals on the payrolls of construction establishments during any part of the pay period which included the 12th of March, June, September, and December. Included are individuals on paid sick leave, paid holidays, paid vacations, and salaried officers and executives of a corporation. Excluded are subcontractors and their employees, temporary staffing obtained from a staffing service, and proprietors and partners of unincorporated businesses.
Includes all permanent full-time and part-time nonleased employees who are on the payrolls of establishments who worked or received pay for any part of the pay period including the 12th of March, June, September, and December.
The "all employees" or "total number of employees" number is the sum of establishment averages of nonleased construction workers plus other nonleased employees who were on the payroll during the pay periods including the 12th of March, June, September, and December.
Note: In the tabulations, the total number of employees will not equal the sum of the average number of construction workers plus the sum of the average number of other workers due to new methodology of calculating employment data.
Includes all nonleased payroll workers (up through the working supervisory level) directly engaged in construction operations, such as painters, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians. Included are journeymen, mechanics, apprentices, laborers, truck drivers and helpers, equipment operators, on-site record keepers, and security guards. Supervisory employees above the working foreman level are excluded from this category and are included in the other employees category.
The average number of nonleased construction workers is the sum of establishment averages of nonleased construction workers who were on the payroll during the pay periods including the 12th of March, June, September, and December.
Note: In the tabulations, the average number of construction workers will not equal the sum of quarterly construction workers divided by four due to new methodology of calculating employment data.
Includes nonleased payroll employees in executive, purchasing, accounting, personnel, professional, technical activities, and routine office functions. Also included are supervisory employees above the working foreman level.
The average number of nonleased other employees is the sum of establishment averages of other employees who were on the payroll during the pay periods including the 12th of March, June, September, and December.
Note: In the tabulations, the average number of other workers will not equal the sum of quarterly other workers divided by four due to new methodology of calculating employment data.
