ADVANCE MONTHLY RETAIL SALES SUMMARY - APRIL 1995 The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that advance estimates of U.S. retail sales for April adjusted for seasonal, holiday, and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $192.6 billion, a decrease of 0.4 percent (+/-1.3%) from the previous month but an increase of 5.0 percent (+/-1.9%) from April 1994. Total sales in the February through April period were 5.3 percent (+/-1.7%) above the same period a year ago. The February to March 1995 percent change was revised from +0.2 percent (+/-1.3%) to +0.8 percent (+/-0.5%). Durable goods decreased 1.5 percent (+/-2.3%) from March but were 5.2 percent above April 1994. Furniture store sales were up 9.3 percent from last year. Nondurable goods increased 0.3 percent (+/-1.2%) from last month and were 4.8 percent above last year. General merchandise sales were up 5.1 percent from April 1994 while gasoline sales were up 7.6 percent during the same period. The advance estimates are based on a small subsample of the Bureau's full retail sales sample. Estimates from the advance and the subsequent full survey can differ because of the earlier reporting in the advance and because of sampling variability present in both surveys. The Advance Monthly Retail Sales Report for May is scheduled to be released June 13, 1995 at 8:30 a.m.\RN 10 01 00 101 TABLE 1A: ESTIMATED ADVANCE MONTHLY RETAIL SALES--APRIL 1995 Adjusted for Seasonal, Holiday and Trading-day Differences (Millions of Dollars) 1995 SIC Kind of business code Apr.
