ADVANCE MONTHLY RETAIL SALES SUMMARY - JULY 1996 The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced today that advance estimates of U.S. retail sales for July adjusted for seasonal, holiday, and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $204.7 billion, an increase of 0.1 percent (+/-1.4%) from the previous month and up 4.7 percent (+/-2.0%) from July 1995. Total sales for the May through July period were 4.9 percent (+/-1.8%) above the same period a year ago. The May to June 1996 percent change was revised from -0.2 percent (+/-1.4%) to -0.5 percent (+/-0.3%). Durable goods decreased 0.4 percent (+/-2.5%) from June but were 6.4 percent above last year. Building materials sales were up 9.2 percent from last year. Nondurable goods increased 0.4 percent (+/-1.3%) from last month and were up 3.6 percent from last year. General merchandise sales were up 2.6 percent from July 1995. The advance estimates are based on a small subsample of the Bureau's full retail sales sample. Estimates from the advance and the subsequent full survey can differ because of the earlier reporting in the advance and because of sampling variability present in both surveys. The Advance Monthly Retail Sales Report for August is scheduled to be released September 13, 1996 at 8:30 a.m. TABLE 1A: ESTIMATED ADVANCE MONTHLY RETAIL SALES--JULY 1996 Adjusted for Seasonal, Holiday and Trading-day Differences (Millions of Dollars) 1996 SIC Kind of business code July June May adv. prel. final Retail trade, total........... 204,689 204,546 205,669 Total (excl. auto group).. 155,499 155,082 155,351 Durable goods, total........ 83,094 83,399 84,053 52 Building mat., hardware, garden supply, and mobile home dealers.. 11,296 11,475 11,025 521,3 Building mat. and supply stores.
